Brian Hoyer is returning to the New England Patriots.

According to The Boston Globe's Jim McBride, Hoyer has signed with the Patriots. The 34-year-old veteran had been released by the Indianapolis Colts over the weekend.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it's a one-year agreement. Rapoport also notes that the Patriots may be done adding veteran quarterbacks. New England already has Cody Kessler and Jarrett Stidham on the roster.

Hoyer began his career with the Patriots back in 2009 as an undrafted free agent. He spent the first three seasons of his career as Tom Brady's backup before becoming a journeyman quarterback.

Hoyer eventually ended up as the starting quarterback for a few different teams. His most notable stints were with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans. Hoyer actually ended up leading the Texans to a playoff berth at the conclusion of the 2015 season.

He would eventually end up back in New England as Brady's backup for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. However, Hoyer was cut by the Patriots prior to the start of the 2019 season.

He actually started a game for the Colts last season while appearing in three of them as Jacoby Brissett's backup. Hoyer threw for four touchdowns and four interceptions last season.

The signing of Philip Rivers as the team's new starting QB meant the end of Hoyer's tenure in Indianapolis. Brissett will return as the backup, which meant the veteran QB became expendable.
