A few weeks prior to the release of Seth Wickersham's in-depth piece on the intense, convoluted drama occurring between New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, owner Robert Kraft, quarterback Tom Brady, and Brady's trainer Alex Guerrero, Guerrero's special sideline privileges were reduced by coach Belichick. Various reports cited “friction” between the two men, leading to Belichick returning the organization to more traditional medical practices in their facilities and on the sideline.

Wickersham's inside article provided a bevy of details on what caused Guerrero's relationship with Belichick to deteriorate despite his strong connection with Brady. Given the fallout of the report, the long-time trainer that helped Brady develop the TB12 method decided to release a statement addressing some of the accusations made against him.

Here are a couple passages from Guerrero's letter:

“Throughout my career I have been blessed to work with many remarkable athletes in a variety of sports. With every one of these clients, my only goal has been to help them bring forth positive changes in their body & mind. I have always tried to be respectful of the staff each player answers to, and I have never tried to create divisiveness or conflict.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me in my career, and to the professional organizations that have allowed me to treat their players — including the New England Patriots. I am grateful to Robert Kraft and his coaches and staff. I am proud to have co-founded the TB12 Sports Therapy Center with Tom, where we’re able to make a daily impact in thousands of people’s lives.”

Guerrero admits that his philosophy on sports science is not mainstream, and he makes it clear that at the end of the day, each individual athlete he treats can decide whether or not they want to follow his advice. He goes on to detail the strong relationship he has built with Tom Brady and how he is gratified by the success that all of his clients have.

Overall, the statement lacks substance with relation to the accusations he's attempting to address. He never directly denies anything from Wickersham's piece or any of the reports that came before it. Instead, he takes a much more general approach by saying he “never tried to create divisiveness or conflict.”

Another interesting takeaway is that Guerrero never refers to Bill Belichick by name. Guerrero is hoping to acknowledge the entirety of New England's coaching and training staff, but given the heavily covered hostility between himself and Belichick, it's certainly of note that he was specifically left out.
