Former Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy has emerged as a new finalist for the New Orleans Pelicans' head coaching job, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Van Gundy is currently a TNT analyst. He last coached for the Pistons from 2014 to 2018.

The Pelicans fired Alvin Gentry after the seeding games ended at Walt Disney World. New Orleans has also been linked to former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue, who is being courted by the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets as well.

The roster in New Orleans is headlined by Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Jrue Holiday, Lonzo Ball, J.J. Redick and Josh Hart in the post–Anthony Davis era. The new Pelicans head coach will certainly have an abundance of talent with which to work.

Williamson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Duke, finished his rookie season with averages of 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 24 games. Ingram, meanwhile, won the 2020 Most Improved Player of the Year Award.

Stan Van Gundy has a career coaching record of 523-384 in the regular season and 48-43 in the playoffs with the Heat, Magic and Pistons. His brother, Jeff Van Gundy, is a candidate to take the Rockets job.

The Pelicans only made the playoffs twice in the Davis era. New Orleans fans are praying the franchise has more success in the Williamson era.
