Alvin Gentry treated New Orleans Pelicans reporters to dinner after getting fired by the team.

As Fletcher Mackel of WDSU wrote, it's pretty impressive considering the Pelicans media called for Gentry's job numerous times this season.

Alvin Gentry went 175-225 in the regular season and 5-4 in the playoffs with New Orleans. He recently told ESPN he expects to coach again in the NBA. The North Carolina native has coached the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns aside from the Pelicans. It will be interesting to see if he gets another opportunity.

The Pelicans were in need of a new voice in the locker room. Gentry had been with the Pelicans since 2015. The team only made the postseason once under his guidance and New Orleans underwhelmed at the Orlando bubble despite being healthy.

The next coach of the Pelicans will be inheriting a talented roster. Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Jrue Holiday, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart are the core players in New Orleans in the post-Anthony Davis era.

Williamson appeared in 24 games during his rookie season. Despite being overweight and out of shape at times, Zion still averaged 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a 20-year-old.

Ingram, meanwhile, becomes a restricted free agent this offseason. The Pelicans are expected to re-sign him.
