Zion Williamson has played just 56 games with the New Orleans Pelicans, but the team has been impressed with his play that they are already looking at the future with him as their cornerstone.

Aside from experimenting with lineups that are designed to bring the best out of Williamson, the Pelicans have also made moves to acquire players that they can pair with the first-time All-Star.

Despite a 14-19 record, New Orleans is reportedly looking for players that can help them in a potential postseason run, according to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer. One player that they have inquired about potentially acquiring is Golden State Warriors guard Kelly Oubre Jr., which they did back in January.

But with the team facing an uphill battle just to reach the postseason, the team is also looking to add to its collection of draft assets, which they accumulated in the trades for Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday. The report states that the Pelicans have been gauging other teams’ interest in players like guards Lonzo Ball, Eric Bledsoe, and JJ Redick in the hopes of getting more picks or pick swaps.

That war chest of draft assets will reportedly be used when the Pelicans make an offer to acquire Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal, should he become available. While a pairing between Williamson and Beal in the Big Easy will indeed be an intriguing possibility, it is unlikely that Beal is available for other teams at this moment, with both the player and the franchise stating their loyalty to each other.

Should the Pelicans fail to find takers for Ball, Bledsoe, and Redick that will offer them significant draft assets before the trade deadline, then the team will likely finish the season with their current group and hope that Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and the rest of the team can get a winning run to boost their playoff hopes.

While a lot of the team’s plans are still subject to change, it is clear that the Pelicans want to make Williamson a centerpiece and an important part of their franchise for years to come.
