Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper has played the role of first baseman. He's played right fielder, and he's also been a designated hitter. Harper is now playing a different part–the role of prom wingman.

Harper is going viral, for a moment that has nothing to do with baseball. Harper helped a young Phillies fan get a date for the prom dance. Harper accompanied the fan to his prospective date's house, where he acted as wingman while the fan asked a young lady to prom.

Harper helped get the assist, as the young woman said yes. The entire incident was captured on social media.

It was a moment to remember for Harper, as well as the young couple. The first baseman is a fan favorite in Philadelphia. This season he is having a fantastic performance on the field, with a .273 batting average. Harper has 10 home runs and 35 runs batted in already for the Phillies. He has been a consistent producer with his bat for the team, since he joined the club in 2019.

Philadelphia is 34-14 on the season, in part due to Harper. The first baseman is a 7-time All-Star. He has won the Silver Slugger Award twice in his career, and finished as the National League home runs leader during the 2015 season. The Phillies are certainly much better with Harper in the lineup. Not only is he a star at the plate, he is also now batting a thousand in the prom wingman game.

A prom date story

The young Phillies fan that Harper helped get a date for prom is named Jake Portello. Portello lives in New Jersey and is a high school student. Portello told a New Jersey television station that he actually knocked on Harper's door and asked him if he would help him get the date.

“I wasn't expecting this, I thought it'd be something cool among my friends and people in my town and stuff,” Portello said, per Fox 29 News. “I didn't even expect [Harper] to open the door in the first place.”

Harper did open the door, and helped out right away. That is truly a story to remember for young Jake and his prom date. The prom is set for June 14, per Fox 29. Maybe the young high schoolers will get to catch a Phillies game before the big day. It would be truly even more memorable if Harper stopped by the prom to say hello and take some photos with the couple.

The Phillies have a lot of baseball to play until then. The team is in action on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 Eastern.
