The Philadelphia Phillies were not assembled with the most analytical mindset. Their roster is comprised of all the talent they can get, even with obvious flaws.

The offseason signings of Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos threw all caution to the wind. Their defensive deficiencies were well known, yet the Phillies added both sluggers to complement their core of hitters, which was headlined by 2021 NL MVP Bryce Harper.

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, Castellanos saw the Phillies' acquisition of Schwarber as a reason to believe in them.

“When they signed Kyle and showed the confidence that they had in who he was, a lot of organizations wouldn't do that for him, because everything is so analytically driven,” Castellanos said. “But knowing who Kyle is – and banking on that – showed me this organization is in tune with baseball players and cares about the right thing. That was peace of mind for me.”

Castellanos spurned the Miami Marlins in free agency after Derek Jeter left the organization because it didn't put its whole effort into winning. The 2021 All-Star knows that the Phillies roster isn't perfect but their willingness to spend money shows they are looking to compete. For players in or past their prime, this is the type of organization you want to be in.

The Phillies have not started off that well but they know that they have work to do. They may also need to make moves to bring in some new pitching, particularly in the bullpen. To keep their playoff drought from expanding past a decade, this Phillies roster will have to lean into its strengths.
