The Pittsburgh Pirates' season is underway, and the team has five games under its belt. At 2-3, they're struggling to find a rhythm early on, but, with 162 games in a season, the rocky start isn't really news to worry about.

However, there was big news out of the Pittsburgh organization recently. The team extended Bryan Reynolds' contract another two years, avoiding arbitration. MLB insider Jeff Passan tweeted the details Thursday morning.

According to Passan, Reynolds is now under contract with the Pirates through the 2025 season, making him a free agent that following offseason.

This deal may come as a surprise to many Pirates fans. Recently, there were many rumors of a Pittsburgh trade involving the outfielder. Clearly, nothing came to fruition, and the 27-year-old is here to stay for another two seasons.

Reynolds was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft. However, he never played for the major league team. Instead, Reynolds was traded to the Pirates in January of 2018 and made his MLB appearance with Pittsburgh in April of 2019.

Now, the switch-hitter is a huge contributor to the Pirates both offensively and defensively. His career batting average is .290 and averages .227 so far this season. Reynolds and the Pirates will look to even out their 2-3 record with a win Thursday night when they begin their four-game home series against the Washington Nationals.
