As Greg Monroe is expected to make his team debut with the Phoenix Suns today, his former coach Stan Van Gundy could potentially see a reunion with him in the near future.

Phoenix has remained hellbent on getting younger, and have debated flipping Monroe to anyone that comes calling with a worthwhile deal. Monroe is a capable asset, but his play at the forward/center position would get on the way of developing the likes of Alex Len, Marquese Chriss, and Dragan Bender.

The lefty big man out of Georgetown had his best years with the Detroit Pistons, averaging 15 points per game through his first five seasons for the team that drafted him with the seventh overall pick in 2010.

Having signed a qualifying offer in his last year, Motor City fans knew Greg Monroe had a foot out the door, which turned into him getting signed by the Milwaukee Bucks as a free agent.

Now that he's been “blindsided” by the trade to the Suns, Van Gundy noted he expected the professionalism coming from Monroe, given how he conducted himself prior to his exit from Detroit.

“I don’t think anybody has to worry about that with Greg,” Van Gundy said, according to Vince Ellis of The Detroit Free Press. “Greg’s a total pro and he’s going to play hard all the time.”

The Pistons could look to take in Monroe's contract and exchange him for Jon Leuer, Boban Marjanovic and perhaps a pick to sweeten up the deal, per Ellis.

Whatever Greg Monroe's defensive concerns used to be, he addressed them during the playoffs earlier this year, making him a solid candidate to return to a much-improved Pistons team.
