After nearly 20 years out of the basketball landscape, Puma is looking to get back in the game. In fact, it sounds like they have their eyes on a potential front man for their campaign: former Oklahoma Sooners point guard Trae Young.

According to a report from ESPN's Nick DePaula, Young and his family recently met with Roc Nation Sports in a effort to vet his options. In the end, the crafty ball-handler did not choose Roc Nation as his agency. However, there was one interesting nugget that came from the meeting. DePaula notes that a representative from Puma was in attendance as part of the pitch, though a PR spokesperson for Roc Nation has since denied that allegation.

Ultimately, Young signed with Octagon Sports for representation. And just for the record, Puma is still interested.

Via ESPN's Nick DePaula:

“There's a magic to certain players. There's an ‘it factor' that's hard to quantify, and I believe he has that,” said Omar Wilkes, one of the Octagon agents representing Young. “He's able to have that with his combination of passing, shooting, ballhandling and charisma. There's an effortless ease about him when he's on the court.”

Trae Young, now 19 years of age, had a breakout freshman season with the Sooners. In his 32 games played (all starts), the Norman, Oklahoma native racked up averages of 27.4 points on 42.2 percent shooting from the field (36.0 percent from beyond the arc), 8.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 35.4 minutes per.

There will be a bit of a competition for Young's signature. DePaula reports that Young and his agency are expected to listen to sneaker endorsement pitches from companies beginning next week in Los Angeles, including Nike, Adidas, Under Armour and Puma.

“Puma, the wild card in the mix, plans to present Young with a prototype of its upcoming fall basketball sneaker this week in advance of its official pitch,” DePaula write in his recent article. “Then the Puma team will showcase its marketing plans, future product concepts, growth strategy and an overview of how the brand plans to re-engage in basketball.”

Whether or not Puma will indeed be able to land Young as their front man remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds like they are interested — and for good reason. Be sure to keep your browsers locked on ClutchPoints for more updates on this topic as they become available.
