The Oakland Raiders traded former first-round draft pick Gareon Conley to the Houston Texans on Monday, acquiring a third-rounder in return.

Afterward, head coach Jon Gruden explained that part of the reason why the Raiders traded the cornerback was because they drafted a pair of corners in Trayvon Mullen and Isaiah Johnson back in April.

“I think he’s good player. I’m not going to get into it other than that,” Gruden said, according to Jerry McDonald of The East Bay Times. “I think he’s a good young player. We drafted two young corners to play also and they’re back ready to go here quickly. We want to give them an opportunity, like we are a lot of young players at other positions.”

Conley is the third former first-round pick the Raiders have traded since Gruden took over the club in 2018.

Of course, Oakland traded away star pass rusher Khalil Mack before the 2018 campaign began, and midway through that season, they dealt wide receiver Amari Cooper.

It should be noted that all three players were drafted by former general manager Reggie McKenzie.

Through six games this season, Conley has logged 23 tackles and an interception.

The 24-year-old missed just about all of his rookie campaign due to a shin injury that ultimately landed him on the injured reserve list, and in 2018, he played in 15 contests and registered 37 tackles, three picks, 15 passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

The Raiders have gotten off to a 3-3 start this season and will get to see Conley next Sunday when they take on the Texans.
