Veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson is about to conclude his first season with the Oakland Raiders. However, he doesn’t want it to be his last. The 33-year-old says he would like to return to the team next season.

“I plan to (return),” Nelson said Wednesday per Scott Bair of NBC Bay Area. “It’s not always the player’s decision. Yeah, that’s the plan. We’ve enjoyed our time out here so far, enjoyed being with the team and starting the rebuilding process and being a part of that.”

Nelson is still under contract with the Raiders next season and is owed $7.2 million in base salary and bonuses. However, that won’t be guaranteed until March 2019.

The rebuilding Raiders could release Nelson this offseason and incur no dead money on their cap. But given Nelson’s production as well as his leadership, the Raiders may decide to keep him around for one more year.

Nelson has been easily the Raiders’ No. 1 wide receiving option this season. He’s got 54 catches for 661 yards — second only to tight end Jared Cook’s 868 yards — with three touchdowns. He’s also had a strong end to the season, tallying 29 catches for 308 yards over the last four weeks.

The Raiders are pretty short on receiving options currently on the roster. Aside from Nelson, they have veterans Brandon LaFell, Dwayne Harris, and Seth Roberts as well as a couple 24-year-olds in Marcell Ateman and Keon Hatcher.

So unless they want to deplete that position even further, there’s a decent chance Nelson gets his wish and has one more season in the silver and black.
