The Oakland Raiders ruled running back Josh Jacobs as out for Sunday's season finale against the Denver Broncos, the team announced.

Jacobs is dealing with a right shoulder fracture. On Wednesday, he had a procedure to treat a skin infection on his leg. He did not practice throughout the week.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden recently noted that Jacobs' status would not hinge on the state of the infection and subsequent surgery. Instead, it would be tied to his shoulder.

“Unfortunately, he does have a skin infection and that, I think, will be OK, but it's the shoulder,” Gruden said on Friday, via Paul Gutierrez of ESPN. “It's been the shoulder, it is the shoulder and that's the area that we've got to take a good look at.”

Jacobs will wind up playing just 13 games in his rookie season. Despite missing three games, the Alabama product is a leading candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. On the season, he has 1,150 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 4.8 yards per attempt. He also has 20 receptions for 166 yards.

Jacobs could return to play in 2019 for the Raiders. He would do so in the postseason. However, to get to the playoffs, the Raiders will need to beat the Broncos while getting some games to go their way. To get there, the Houston Texans would have to beat the Tennessee Titans, the Baltimore Ravens would have to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Indianapolis Colts would have to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars.

If the four games go Oakland's way, there is a chance Jacobs finishes his rookie season with a game played.
