The Oakland Raiders are nearing wrapping up what has been a disappointing 2018 campaign in their first year under head coach Jon Gruden that has seen them fall well short of the playoffs.

They have suffered a few notable injuries along the way, including Pro Bowl left tackle Donald Penn being placed on the injured reserve due to a groin injury. However, that doesn't mean that he will be back on the field as Gruden has indicated that it doesn't look like he will be playing again this year, according to Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area.

“We’ll make that decision here in the next few days, but it doesn’t look like he will play this year,” Gruden said. “It doesn’t look like he will be back.”

Penn has been back on the practice field since December 5, which has given him a three-week window to be placed back on the 53-man roster or push him back to the injured reserve. Given that the team isn't playing for anything beyond finishing out the season, it doesn't give Oakland much of an incentive to bring him back to the field for the final two games.

What this also signals is that the team could be contemplating moving on from Penn after this season as that had been the chatter a few months ago prior to the start of the year. He is set to make around $8.3 million for the 2019 campaign in base salary and bonuses. What should be noted is that there is only a $2.7 million dead salary cap hit, which would significantly lessen the financial burden if they wanted to move on.

Penn has spent the last five seasons with the Raiders, where he has been a key piece of the offensive line while earning a pair of Pro Bowl selections.
