There has been little to no indication that the Oakland Raiders are ready to move on from Derek Carr at quarterback, but that does not mean they won't draft a signal-caller in the first round.

According to Peter King of NBC's Football Morning in America, the Raiders are giving consideration to taking a quarterback with one of their three first-round draft picks in April.

Should Oakland do that, it would be following in the footsteps of the Kansas City Chiefs, who drafted Patrick Mahomes during the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft in spite of having Alex Smith under center.

It worked out pretty well for the Chiefs, as Mahomes learned under Smith for one year before supplanting him as the starting quarterback in 2018. Mahomes, of course, ended up throwing for a league-leading 50 touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl appearance this season.

As King notes, though, we don't really know if Carr would be all that amenable to mentoring a young quarterback like Smith did in Kansas City.

Carr is coming off of a disappointing 2018 campaign in which he threw for 4,049 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 68.9 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 93.9.

A terrible year? No, but it was not the type of season he has had in the past.

Remember: in 2016, Carr was seen as an MVP candidate when he threw for 3,937 yards, 28 touchdowns and just six picks before breaking his leg in Week 16, causing him to miss the Raiders' first playoff appearance since the 2002-03 campaign.
