With the Los Angeles Rams on the East Coast to start their 2019 NFL season against the Carolina Panthers, veteran safety Eric Weddle left the game, taking a knee to the head and being carted off the field in his debut for the Rams.

Per The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue on Twitter, Weddle suffered a head laceration but is also being evaluated for a concussion. The 34-year-old defensive back will not return to the Week 1 tilt.

The six-time Pro Bowl safety was a massive get for the Rams in the offseason. As a free agent, Weddle left the Baltimore Ravens in favor for the Los Angeles franchise, signing a two-year, $10 million contract to contribute to the secondary.

The Weddle-Rams union took a hit with this concussion news.

Weddle spent the first nine seasons of his professional career with the then–San Diego Chargers, earning his first five Pro Bowl appearances and two first-team All-Pro selections in San Diego. The Chargers had selected the Utah product with their second-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

The Ravens snatched Weddle from the Chargers when he signed with the AFC North franchise as a free agent in 2016—a four-year, $26 million deal that ended when he was released in March earlier this year. The Rams jumped at the chance to sign Weddle.

L.A., coming off a Super Bowl appearance last season, needs Weddle to solidify its secondary.
