Over the last few days, there have been some encouraging reports concerning contract talks with the Los Angeles Rams star and defensive tackle Aaron Donald's extension, with the two sides getting closer to hammering it out.

However, head coach Sean McVay has pumped the brakes a little on that promising notion, stating that it is difficult to say when the 27-year-old will be back with the team. (h/t Rotoworld)

McVay also avoided putting a timetable on Donald's return, saying it is “hard to say” if the defender will report by the end of the week. “I think that we're proactively working to try to get this thing done,” McVay said. “We'd like to see Aaron here. But if not, if we're not able to, we sure have a lot of confidence in the guys that are here.”

Although McVay continues to stay the course of not putting a timetable on a return for Donald, it is clear that both sides are progressing forward toward a deal. Reports have suggested that both sides are nearing an agreement on a four-year extension that would give him a salary around $22 million a year and $80 in guaranteed money, which would both make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league as well as one of the top-paid overall players in the NFL.

The Rams continue to stay the path of offering Donald a contract that he has earned with his play on the field, as he has established himself as arguably the best defensive player in the NFL in his first four years in the league. During that span, he has earned four straight Pro Bowl selections, three First-Team All-Pro nods, and a NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

It appears that it's just a matter of time before Donald has a new lucrative extension in place that will keep in him Los Angeles for the long haul, but an exact date is still unclear.
