On Tuesday, the New England Patriots made a move that no one saw coming, as the storied NFL franchise tends to do. Bill Belichick and company decided to trade wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for picks in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Rams, who had been rumored to be going after Odell Beckham Jr. in trade talks, decided to take a different route to upgrade their receiving corps. Cooks is a solid addition to the downfield weapons for Jared Goff in Los Angeles and it appears the wideout could be staying for quite some time, according to Patriots beat writer Jeff Howe.

With all the moves the Rams brass has made during the NFL offseason, it is clear that the team is determined to compete for a Super Bowl title immediately and for the foreseeable future. Adding Cooks and quickly beginning the process of working on a contract extension is a sign of their eagerness to keep a talented team intact for the long haul.

Although there's no telling whether the extension will ultimately get done with Cooks, the team seems to be making all the right moves as they attempt to take the next step toward becoming among the league's elite teams.

Cooks is one of a long list of impressive additions the Rams have made. Los Angeles also found a way to upgrade the defense considerable with the acquisitions of cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters in trades and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh through NFL free agency.
