When the Texas Rangers signed Marcus Semien over the offseason, they were expecting big things from the slugger. He was an MVP finalist in 2021 after producing a monster season. However, the second baseman struggled mightily out of the gates in 2022 and the label of “bust” was being linked to his name. But Semien broke out in a major way on Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians.

Marcus Semien produced a 3 home run, 7 base hit day in the Rangers doubleheader vs. the Guardians in Cleveland. He became the first player since 1973 to post 3 homers and 7 hits in one day. Despite losing Game 1, Texas bounced back with a victory in Game 2. But for Semien, it was a terrific performance in both games. Semien has now blasted 5 home runs over the past two weeks after going homer-less to open the season.

Semien commented on his elite day at the plate for the Rangers.

“I think doubleheaders can be crazy like that. You just show up and the swing feels good, and you're getting pitches to hit and taking balls. I felt that way in the first game, and I didn't change anything in between games. I just kept the same mindset and felt good.”

In other words, Semien was locked in. He was seeing the ball well en route to the historic performance. He later discussed how he managed to overcome his slump.

“That's nothing I've changed, but it's just constant work in the cage and constantly trying to get in a position where you're hitting fastballs, taking breaking balls out of the zone and controlling the strike zone all at the same time. I'm doing those things. I usually do a lot better, so I think I'm on the right track.”

Marcus Semien is heating up. The Rangers are finally getting what they paid for.
