New Baltimore Ravens defensive end Derek Wolfe will earn a base salary of $3 million in 2020 despite notching seven sacks in 12 games with the Denver Broncos last season.

However, Wolfe was not particularly concerned with the financials.

The 30-year-old said he wanted to sign with the Ravens, seeing an opportunity when Baltimore's deal with Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Michael Brockers fell through (via Matthew Stevens of USA TODAY):

“When I saw that [Michael] Brockers didn’t pass his physical, I immediately called my agent and said ‘what’s going on with the Ravens.’ And he said ‘I’m already on the phone.’

“I said ‘I really don’t care about the money at this point, I just want to get on that team.’ That’s the team I want to be on because I feel like if I can come in there and prove myself, they’ll extend me for a few years and I can be a part of the organization for more than just one year. That was my goal.”

Wolfe's decision to leave money on the table in pursuit of a Super Bowl with the Ravens already links him to fellow teammate Calais Campbell.

Campbell also turned down more money for the opportunity to play with the Ravens, setting in motion Baltimore's decision to acquire the former All-Pro and sign him to an extension.

The Ravens are now stacked with edge rushers, and they might attempt to accrue future draft picks if they elect to trade Matt Judon.

In any case, Baltimore is clearly seen as a winning destination after the Ravens finished with the best record in 2019.
