Entering the 2018 NFL Draft, most had Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen ahead of Lamar Jackson in their quarterback rankings. As the draft unfolded, teams selections resembled that as all four were taken before the Baltimore Ravens selected Jackson with the last pick in the first round.

Thought of a gimmick entering the NFL, due to his outstanding athleticism but concerns of viability as a pro passer, some thought Jackson would have a better career at wide receiver.

However, one unnamed personnel director thought he'd be the best quarterback in the class. They said, via Mike Sando of The Athletic:

“To me, he is better than all of them. Whoever wants to really get a real dude, they will take that and roll with it. Have you ever seen a quarterback not talk in public, not wanting to be the main guy in front as the leader? He doesn’t want all that. He just wants to go play football and that is not going to resonate well. That is going to leave him picked later, but his talent is so good that it’s undeniable.

You are going to have to draft the guy somewhere in the first round. Somebody is going to get a heckuva quarterback. If I’m a team who has a veteran guy that is at the end, needs one or two years, I’m taking that guy because after those two years, I’m letting it fricking roll.”

The Ravens let it “fricking roll” and are currently reaping the benefits. Through the first two games of the 2019 season, Jackson has outpaced his fellow 2018 draft-class mates by throwing for 596 yards and a league-leading seven touchdowns to no interceptions and a league-leading 145.2 passer rating.
