Baltimore Ravens tight end Nick Boyle was set to hit the market as a free agent this offseason. However, it appears the front office will not even let it get to that point.

Boyle's prospects were expected to bode relatively well considering the lack of tight ends available. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Ravens have secured a three-year deal with him ahead of free agency:

The Ravens and TE Nick Boyle agreed to terms on a 3-year extension worth $18M, source said. He gets $10M in guarantees.

The payday for Boyle may come as a bit of a surprise considering he only hauled in 23 receptions for a career-high 213 yards. It is usually those that excel in the passing game that tends to be rewarded with lucrative deals. However, it is clear that he has made quite the impression in Baltimore.

The Ravens selected Boyle in the fifth round  of the 2015 draft, out of Delaware. He has since etched out an integral role for himself in the offense as the starting tight end. There is no question that it is largely due to his blocking prowess.

The move certainly makes sense for Baltimore as they transition the offense around quarterback Lamar Jackson. It is no secret that Jackson's strength lies in the run game and he will need as much protection as possible if the Ravens are looking to avoid wear and tear. Despite his status as a run-blocker, they may also look to get him more involved in the passing game in order to get more bang for their buck.
