The Red Sox received two major updates on star pitcher Chris Sale, per MLB insider Jon Morosi and Red Sox manager Alex Cora.

Update: Chris Sale could return to #RedSox rotation as early as next week. Alex Cora told @MLBNetworkRadio that team officials will see how he’s feeling on Thursday after tomorrow’s injury rehab start. If all checks out, Sale’s subsequent game could be at @MLB level. @MLBNetwork

First off, Sale's return is the standout headline. The 7-time All-Star hasn't pitched since last season. Despite dealing with injuries prior to 2021, Sale performed well for the Red Sox last year. The veteran left-hander pitched to the tune of a 3.16 ERA in 42.2 innings pitched.

But the other important part of this news is that Morosi said Sale could return to the rotation… not the bullpen. So it appears as if Boston will indeed utilize Chris Sale as a starting pitcher upon his return. This is noteworthy because there were previous reports stating that Sale might be used in a bullpen role this year.

Boston has roared back from an extremely disappointing start to the 2022 campaign. The Red Sox currently sit in second place in the AL East. But pitching depth is a question for the Red Sox. Nathan Eovaldi and Rich Hill are currently on the injured list. Nick Pivetta and Michael Wacha have performed well in the rotation, but adding an experienced star like Sale will only help matters in the long run.

We can expect the Red Sox to ease him back into the swing of things. It wouldn't be surprising to see Boston limit Sale to 5 innings or less through his first few starts.

But Red Sox fans can rejoice, as Chris Sale will return very soon.
