We are saddened to learn of the passing of three-time All-Star Wilbur Wood. A left-handed knuckleballer, Wood spent 12 of his 17 Major League seasons with the White Sox from 1967-78. The Massachusetts native also spent time with the Red Sox and Pirates. After mastering the knuckler, Wood’s durability was his hallmark, leading the AL in appearances as a reliever three times (1968-70) and games started four times (1972-75). He won 20+ games and pitched 300+ innings four straight seasons from 1971-74. In 1972, Wood started 49 games, went 24-17 with a 2.51 ERA over 376.2 innings, and finished a close second to Gaylord Perry in AL Cy Young voting.Wood finished with 164 career victories. He was 84 years old.
