Running back Adrian Peterson had something that had never happened to him before in his professional career. He was a healthy scratch in the Washington Redskins' Week 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's not something to expect to happen to a player of Peterson's caliber, but he's not upset about the benching.

“It's water under the bridge. The situation is what it is. The only thing I can do now is make the best of it and help the team win games.”

Peterson did say that the benching was “extremely hard” for him to deal with and insists that he doesn't have any negative feelings about head coach Jay Gruden. Many players on the team came to his defense, with Morgan Moses calling the benching a “slap in the face” for a player of Peterson's caliber.

Peterson dealt with the benching in the best way he could in not trying to make the situation about him.

“I didn't want the way I was feeling to affect the team or the running back room. I just had to bite down and lock in. It was Guice's first game back in a year, coming off an ACL injury. Energy is everything. I wanted to make sure I had that positive energy, that I was upbeat, that I wasn't moping or anything like that. That's just the approach that I took.”

And with second-year back Derrius Guice sidelined with a meniscus injury, they should look to utilize Peterson as much as they possibly can in their Week 2 matchup against the Cowboys.
