The Washington Redskins' addition of Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith has reunited him with his former longtime San Francisco 49ers teammate tight end Vernon Davis since both were a member of that franchise.

Davis has quickly taken note of that connection that he has established with Smith over their six seasons together that they could carry over in Washington, according to John Keim of ESPN.

“A lot of guys came up to me and said, ‘You and Alex seem to have a great connection,'” Davis said. “‘It’s like you guys never left each other.'”

The duo had plenty of success together with the 49ers that saw them become a key connection in the passing game that helped push the franchise toward forward. Davis currently has the most touchdown receptions (30) from any player that Smith has played with in his career. This saw him become among the most productive tight ends in the league during that time as he notched over 50 receptions and 750 receiving yards four times along with posting double-digit touchdowns twice over that span.

Although he is in the back end of his career, Davis has proven that he can still be a valuable asset in the passing game. He had shown that in place of Jordan Reed last season posting 43 catches for 648 receiving yards and three touchdowns in all 16 regular season games played. The return of Reed will foreseeably reduce his role, but he should at least be a major asset in the passing game, especially in the red zone due to his connection with Smith.

There is plenty of potential with this pairing that could be a key feature in the passing game that could help Smith lead the Redskins to success this upcoming season. Nonetheless, it should be something that will help the team offensively in 2018 and possibly beyond.
