Running back Derrius Guice took a significant tumble in the NFL Draft. Once touted as a first-round pick and potentially the second-best back in the draft, Guice dropped all the way down to the edge of the second round, in part due to reports that he got into an altercation during a meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles.

However, those concerns weren’t enough to dissuade the Washington Redskins, who eventually took Guice with the 59th overall pick. Redskins VP of player personnel Doug Williams feels Guice may just be misunderstood given his tough background.

“To be honest with you, he grew up in the area that I grew up,” Williams recently said on SiriusXM NFL Radio (per PFT's Mike Florio). “I know more about him than a lot of folks have known about him. And when you think about this kid from where he comes from and to be in the position that he’s in, you’ve got to applaud the kid, and you know sometimes people will misunderstand a kid that comes out of where he comes out of. There’s an area down in Baton Rouge they call ‘The Bottom.’ Very few young men come out of ‘The Bottom.'”

Given the Redskins’ need for a true feature running back, it made sense that they’d be the ones to take the chance on Guice. Even if concerns about Guice turn out to be true, his talent is such that it’s worth gambling on him getting his act together in the NFL, especially if it just costs them a late-second round pick.

If Guice remains on his best behavior and makes good on his potential in D.C., he’ll have a great chance of making that Redskins No. 1 running back spot his own over the likes of Samaje Perine and Rob Kelley.
