Washington Redskins defensive lineman Jonathan Allen is believed to have suffered an MCL sprain during the team's Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. He is considered week to week.

Allen is one of the top players on the Redskins' defense, so if he is out for a prolonged period of time, this will be significant for Washington.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Redskins in the first round (17th overall pick) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He played in just five games during his rookie campaign due to a Lisfranc injury that required surgery, finishing with 10 tackles and a sack.

Then, last year, Allen broke out, appearing in all 16 contests and racking up 61 tackles and eight sacks.

He had a terrific collegiate career at Alabama, arriving at the school in 2013 and becoming a key piece of the defense as soon as his sophomore season when he totaled 32 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks.

The Anniston, Al. native then showed massive improvement during his junior year, registering 36 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 12 tackles and a forced fumble.

Allen followed that up by dominating once again in his senior campaign, recording 69 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown.

The Redskins fell to the Eagles on the road by a score of 32-27 in their season opener. They will now head home to play host to the Dallas Cowboys net Sunday.
