New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees was hoping on a better second opinion regarding his cracked ribs and collapsed lungs.

However, doctors confirmed the injuries Brees sustained during the team's Week 10 over the San Francisco 49ers. The veteran was likely to miss at least two games. Now, he will miss at least the next three.

The Saints confirmed Friday they were placing Brees on injured reserve, which requires a minimum of three weeks before being activated.

The 41-year-old will not be eligible to return until the team's Week 14 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Of course, Brees could be sidelined even longer given the severity of the injury as well as the fact doctors advised him against playing due to the collapsed lung.

Jameis Winston had replaced Brees when he suffered the injury late in the first half against the Niners. But Taysom Hill has been getting the reps with the starting unit, and will get his first start under center.

Hill came out of BYU as a quarterback, but the Saints have used him as a hybrid in their offense. The 30-year-old lines up out wide and runs option looks. He occasionally throws the ball as well, having completed four of five attempts this year.

Although New Orleans has a pretty friendly upcoming schedule, Hill still has plenty of responsibility on his shoulders.

The Saints have just a half-game advantage on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South. New Orleans owns the tiebreaker, but the slightest of slips in Brees' absence could make all the difference between earning a top seed in the NFC or playing on Wild Card weekend.
