Drew Brees has chosen his victim from his thumb injury that sidelined him for five weeks: the Arizona Cardinals. According to Diana Russini and Ed Werder of ESPN, the New Orleans Saints quarterback will get the start on Sunday over Teddy Bridgewater.

Brees suffered a thumb injury during New Orleans' Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He spent five weeks undergoing rehab for the surgery that followed. In doing so, he missed his first regular-season game since 2003, when he played for the then-San Diego Chargers.

Earlier in the week, Brees stated that he would play on Sunday. On Wednesday, he stated “that's the plan” after being asked if his goal was to play this week, per Mike Triplett of ESPN.

The 26-year-old Bridgewater inserted as the starter in-place of Brees. He did so admirably, as he went 5-0 as the starter in New Orleans. Since Brees went down, the 26-year-old has gone undefeated as the starter, throwing for 1,370 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions on a 67.7% clip in the process.

However, for as good as Bridgewater has been, the Saints offense is designed for Brees. There is no quarterback in the NFL that knows it better than him. Furthermore, he’s potentially in the last season of his career. He isn’t going to sit on the bench, especially considering that just last year, he was second in MVP voting.

The Cardinals pass defense has been suspect in 2019. The Saints offense, now re-led by Brees, could be in-store for a field day on Sunday.
