New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston grew emotional speaking about what it meant to spend time with Drew Brees during the legendary quarterback's final season in the NFL.

Winston said he had immense admiration for the “resilience” and “passion” Brees showed in his final season. The former No. 1 pick also said Brees “doesn't even know how much he means to me and my family.”

Winston added, “I really love Drew Brees.”

The Saints icon and future Hall of Famer called it quits this spring after 20 splendid seasons in the NFL. The lessons Brees imparted to Winston could prove vital in determining the future of New Orleans' quarterback position.

Taysom Hill was the starter when Brees was injured in a Week 10 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. Hill went 3-1 as the starter and should have the opportunity to win the starting job in camp.

But Winston will also have that opportunity.

The Saints had indicated they were keen on re-signing Winston in free agency after what they had seen from him in 2020. New Orleans did indeed re-up with Winston on a one-year deal up to $12 million.

Winston has shown plenty of potential throughout the course of his career. He made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season (2015) and led the NFL in passing yards in 2019. But Winston's decision-making has often been called into question. He threw 30 interceptions in the aforementioned 2019 campaign and has had fumbling issues.

Still, the Saints prefer to see the upside in Winston. Perhaps his experience playing under Brees will be beneficial heading into an interesting quarterback competition.
