The New Orleans Saints nearly outlasted the San Francisco 49ers in a firefight on Sunday. Quarterback Drew Brees tossed his fifth touchdown pass of the day to receiver Tre'Quan Smith late in the fourth quarter, giving the Saints a 46-45 edge that they would be unable to hold over the final minute.

Brees' toss to Smith gave him five passing touchdowns in a regular-season game for the first time since Week 8 of the 2015 season when he slung seven scores versus the New York Giants.

New Orleans ultimately came out on the losing end of the contest as San Francisco kicked a 30-yard game-winner as time expired. The Saints still were able to clinch the NFC South despite the loss, although the team's route to the No. 1 seed in the NFC now seems muddled over the following weeks with the defeat.
