There was a lot of drama in Norman over the last week, with Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley trying his best to be secretive about his quarterback decision for Saturday's game against the TCU Horned Frogs. After benching preseason Heisman Trophy candidate Spencer Rattler for freshman phenom Caleb Williams in last Saturday's thrilling win over the Texas Longhorns, Riley decided to stick with Williams against TCU.

Based on how Williams played in his first start, Rattler might not play again for Oklahoma. The freshman completed 18 out of 23 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed nine times for 66 yards and a score:

After the game, Riley did his best to be diplomatic about the situation, per Joe Buettner of The Associated Press:

“Caleb got the opportunity tonight, and obviously did a great job with it,” Riley said. “I’m confident that had Spencer gotten the opportunity tonight with the way he practiced, he would’ve played very well also. Thought the room handled it great. Proud of those guys for a winning effort and being team-first guys.”

Riley doesn't want to shatter Rattler's confidence, so the Sooners coach is still talking him up despite everything that has happened. It's the right thing to do as a coach, but again, it's going to be hard to go back to Rattler if Williams is going to play like this.

While this was just one start, Williams also provided the spark in the win over Texas. The fourth-ranked Sooners are in position to make the College Football Playoff, though there's still a lot of work to be done over the rest of the season to earn that spot. How Riley manages the quarterback situation the rest of the way will be one of the biggest storylines to watch in college football.
