The 50th overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft, Darius Songaila has had a roller-coaster NBA journey. Now, Songaila is joining Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs as a member of the player development team.

As a player, Songaila bounced around five NBA teams during his eight-year tenure. He is arguably most known as a do-it-all role player for the Chis Webber-led Sacramento Kings and Glibert Arenas-led Washington Wizards. After the 2010-11 NBA season, he ventured into playing for various teams overseas.

His careers averages in the NBA were 6.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.

The former NBA player has long retired from hardwood action. He had been working as an assistant coach overseas after his retirement in 2015, and he also had a stint with the Nets' 2018 Summer League team before joining San Antonio.

With young talent on the Spurs like Dejounte Murray, Jakob Poeltl, Derrick White, and Lonnie Walker IV, Songaila will have plenty of opportunities to impart his wisdom and have an influence on Gregg Popovich's staff.

San Antonio will be looking to overcome the trade of superstar Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in 2018-19. Getting DeMar DeRozan back in the trade was key, giving the Spurs an All-Star to replace Leonard and stay competitive in the loaded Western Conference.
