The San Antonio Spurs expect DeMar DeRozan's second year in their system to be even better.

San Antonio is getting starting point guard Dejounte Murray back next season, which means DeRozan will get to focus on scoring the ball even more in 2019-20. Murray missed the entire 2018-19 campaign with an ACL injury.

DeMar DeRozan will be entering his second year in the Spurs’ system, and that should jump-start an offense that will return Dejounte Murray to the lineup. DeRozan started the season strong last year, but there were times when his play was a bit affected, with the Spurs needing him to become a playmaker with Murray out and Derrick White in and out of the lineup because of injuries.

Now that Murray is back, DeRozan can return his focus to what he does best: scoring. The Spurs expect his second year in their system to be even better.

“That second year of being in a system is always great for a player,” Spurs assistant coach Will Hardy said. “I’m just excited to see how we build on last year because we do have a little bit of continuity.”

In his first season with the Spurs, DeRozan averaged 21.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists. The 30-year-old California native shot 48.1 percent from the field and 83.0 percent from the free-throw line.

The Spurs lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2019 playoffs in seven games. DeRozan put up 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the series.

Nothing is set in stone, but the Spurs will likely start Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay and LaMarcus Aldridge next season. On paper, that’s a pretty good starting five.
