Last Sunday, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver coach Darryl Drake unexpectedly passed away at the age of 62. To honor the late coach, the Steelers will place a decal with his initials on the back of their helmets for all of 2019.

According to the Steelers' photo of a JuJu Smith-Schuster helmet, the American flag will be on the left side, with a yellow decal of Drake's initial on the right side.

Drake reportedly complained about chest pains at training camp, went to the hospital, passed his tests, and then left. He died overnight in the dorm room at St. Vincent's College in Latrobe. The death of their receivers coach — whom the Steelers hired in 2018 — is a tough one for the Steelers family.

Head coach Mike Tomlin canceled Sunday's practice and switched the off-day from Tuesday to Monday so his team could process to the unexpected death.

“I thought the first thing that they needed, and we all needed, was time to digest what transpired in some way, to digest it in individual ways. That’s why I cancelled work last Sunday. That’s why we switched the off-day from Tuesday to Monday. It just gave guys a block of time to absorb, in whatever ways they could absorb what transpired,” said Tomlin per Steelers.com's Bob Labriola.

“It also gave us time to mobilize and be thoughtful about the assistance we would give them – the professional grief counseling, etc. I think that was the first reaction in regards to the guys – to provide the space and the time so they could grieve in whatever ways that they grieve, but also time to mobilize a plan to support them in the professional ways in which they need to be supported.”

Drake wasn't just a receivers coach for the Steelers; he also helped the team move forward during their dramatic 2018 campaign.

Left tackle Alejandro Villanueva said, via The Athletic's Mark Kaboly, “Last year, he obviously had a pretty important role with some of the distractions in the locker room and we all thought he handled that very well, and at the end of the day he spoke about the value of team and unity. His voice was heard. He definitely was one of the coaches or individuals on the team who helped us get through a tough offseason and tough end of the season last year.”

Displaying a decal is a nod of respect for a man that helped lead a team off of the field.
