During the Pittsburgh Steelers' narrow 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football, the NFL world witnessed a scary moment early in the first quarter when Steelers star linebacker suffered a potentially serious spine injury while making an open-field tackle.

The Steelers gave an update on Shazier's current condition on Tuesday afternoon, per team Director of Communications Burt Lauten.

Ryan Shazier continues to be hospitalized at UC Health's University of Cincinnati Medical Center and has undergone a series of tests to evaluate his spine injury. He will continue to be monitored and treated by the neurosurgery experts at UC Medical Center until he has been cleared to return to Pittsburgh. It is expected that Ryan will undergo additional testing and evaluation over the next 24 to 48 hours, and he will then return to Pittsburgh to receive further evaluation and care at UPMC,” the Steelers said in a joint statement from David Okonkwo, M.D., Ph.D., and Joseph Cheng, M.D., on Ryan Shazier.

This is at least comforting news knowing that Shazier will soon return to Pittsburgh and did not have to have surgery for his spinal contusion, as stated by Lauten last night.

These types of injuries really put into perspective how dangerous the game of football can be and how quickly someone's life can change. Keep Shazier in your thoughts and prayers.

More details will be posted on Shazier's condition as soon as they become available.
