On Monday, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier sustained what is now deemed as a spinal contusion during a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Although the victory was a big one for the 10-2 Steelers, who kept up with the 10-2 New England Patriots in the race for the best record in the AFC, the biggest news of the day was the injury to Shazier after he made a head-first tackle in the first quarter.

Shazier immediately grabbed his back and rolled over while flexing his fingers on his right hand. It was a disconcerting sight to say the least, and the fact that it happened during a Monday Night Football game created even more of a buzz on social media.

Shazier trended on Twitter, with people expressing their support and prayers with the hashtag “#Shalieve”.

Shazier, who is now back in Pittsburgh after spending time at the Cincinnati Medical Center, found time to express thanks on Twitter for everyone keeping him in their thoughts .

Shazier will continue to undergo tests in Pittsburgh to fully determine the extent of his injury, and eventually provide a timetable for his recovery.

Named to the Pro Bowl last season, Shazier has 89 tackles this season to go with two forced fumbles and three interceptions.
