Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was not surprised with Mason Rudolph's performance Sunday in a tie with the winless Detroit Lions. During his postgame press conference, Tomlin breaks down Rudolph's performance, as well as the injuries sustained and his initial knee jerk reaction to the game.

When asked about what he thought about Mason Rudolph's performance in place of Ben Roethlisberger, he was not surprised.

“He did what we expected him to do. He gave us a chance to win. But that’s not the first opportunity for him. This guy’s been at it for awhile. We expected him to play well. And we thought he gave us a chance to win.”

It was announced on Saturday that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. That forced Mason Rudolph into action. Rudolph finished the game 30-50 for 242 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The game was severely impacted by weather. It rained heavily on and off during the game, making it difficult for player's to hold onto the ball. With just under a minute left in overtime and the Steelers approaching field goal range, Pat Freiermuth fumbled out in the flat. The Lions recovered, essentially ending the game in a tie.

It is a deflating tie for a team with post season aspirations. The Lions entered the game Sunday 0-8. Those are the teams you need to find a way to win against and the Steelers did not do that. If Pittsburgh fails to make the playoffs, this will be the game they look back on.
