There is no doubt about Lonzo Ball being a talented basketball player who has the potential to be an NBA star someday. However, with the numerous bold and controversial statements his father, LaVar Ball, has been saying the past couple of months, there is growing belief that his draft stock may get affected as teams become more and more concerned of his possible involvement, should they add the 19-year-old to their fold.

Lonzo Ball’s former coach at UCLA recently talked about his experience with the elder Ball. And as surprising as it may be to fans who are familiar with his absurd comments, Steve Alford came to LaVar Ball's defense, via Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times.

Was LaVar Ball around the team much?

“Zero,” Alford said.

Was he ever at practice?

“Never at practice,” Alford said. “Never at practice; never called me.”

Did he ever try to meddle in your coaching?

“Never,” Alford said.

This is certainly good news to teams who are interested in the services of Lonzo Ball, especially the Los Angeles Lakers, who many believe may select him second overall in next month’s draft.

Should Alford’s claim hold true as well in the NBA, it would lessen the risk on whichever team adds the talented guard to their lineup. It would also explain LaVar Ball’s often ridiculed opinion about his sons and basketball-related issues as possibly his way of getting more attention to them, and ultimately getting what he wants in the end.
