Earlier, it was reported that the Phoenix Suns handed Earl Watson the proverbial pink slip after a disappointing 0-3 start by the team this season. While Watson was far from the only reason the Suns have been rapidly slipping to NBA irrelevancy, the Suns’ management cut the coach nonetheless.

As Watson’s replacement, the Suns have named Jay Triano as the team’s interim head coach, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN has reported via Twitter.

Watson became the Suns’ coach in 2015 and amassed a coaching record of 33-85 with the team. The Suns do not have a clear direction of where their franchise is going. Star point guard Eric Bledsoe tweeted that he doesn’t “want to be here”, widely believed as a reference to Phoenix prior to Watson’s sacking, which probably was a prophetic message of what was then to develop shortly thereafter.

Phoenix has plenty of young talents but the Suns are having a hard time developing them. Take for example Alex Len, whose contract expires next summer.

The changing of coach from Earl Watson to Jay Triano likely won’t do much in improving the current state of the Suns, but supplanting a head coach has always been a go-to action by disgruntled front offices of struggling clubs throughout NBA history so this development isn’t really much of a surprise.

Triano, who’s coached the Toronto Raptors before and also served as an assistant to Mike Krzyzewski for Team USA, will make his debut for Phoenix on Monday against the Sacramento Kings.
