The Phoenix Suns are reportedly interested in trading for Dallas Mavericks starting point guard Dennis Smith Jr., according to Kevin O'Connor of the Ringer.

The Suns have been looking for a starting-caliber point guard since last summer, and Dennis Smith Jr. has become expendable in Dallas with the emergence of Mavs rookie phenom Luka Doncic.

In 28 games this season for the Mavs, Smith Jr. is averaging 12.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists. The explosive scoring guard is shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from beyond the arc and 68.1 percent from the free-throw line.

Dallas drafted Smith Jr. with the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. The 21-year-old has dealt with a wrist and back injury all season and won't play on Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Suns star guard Devin Booker has been handling the point guard duties for Phoenix this season. The Suns could actually use a player like Smith Jr., who can create his own shot off the dribble, get to the paint and finish at the rim and create shots for others. It would take the offensive load off of Booker's shoulders.

There's no indication that the Mavs want to trade Smith Jr., but it's something to keep an eye on with the trade deadline almost a month away.
