The Kansas City Chiefs will be in action in the AFC Divisional Round against the Houston Texans. Kansas City was granted a bye in Week 17 after the New England Patriots suffered a stunning loss. The Chiefs and their dynamic offense will take the field as favorites over Houston and are expected to roll in this one.

Kansas City has one of the best offenses in football and averaged 28.2 points per game in the regular season, which was fifth in the league. The Chiefs were ranked sixth in total offense and fifth in passing yards per game. This is no surprise given they had Patrick Mahomes throwing the ball to the likes of Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill.

Where they struggled was in the run game. The Chiefs averaged 98.1 rushing yards per game which was 23rd in the NFL. Damien Williams was viewed as the No. 1 back in the offense coming into the season. The Chiefs signed LeSean McCoy after he was released by the Buffalo Bills. Both running backs failed to rush for 500 yards this season. Combined, the two rushed for 4.5 yards per carry.

It is obvious that the Chiefs are not a run-first offense but they will need to establish a bit of the ground game against the Texans.

Can Damien Williams get going against Houston?

The Texans fell behind on Wild Card weekend against the Bills but rode their defense to a come from behind victory. J.J. Watt returned to action for the first time since having surgery on a torn pec and looked like a monster. He was getting to the quarterback at will in the second half.

This is something that the Chiefs need to avoid. Establishing the run will slow down the pass rush. Right now, the Chiefs are viewed as one-dimensional. This will allow the Texans to game plan against the pass and send their strong pass rushers to Mahomes.

Damien Williams contributing will be key for the rest of the postseason if the Chiefs move on as well. There are other explosive offenses left, including the Baltimore Ravens, that can score with the Chiefs. Having a ground game will allow the Chiefs to hold onto the ball and sustain drives. They are one of the most explosive offenses in the game but it helps if defenses have to guard multiple things.

When it comes to Williams against the Texans, he will be able to help slow the pass rush and allow the Chiefs to work in play action. He may not be seen as a huge x-factor in this game but a strong game from Williams will go a long way.
