The Kansas City Chiefs are getting set to play host to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, and what was initially billed a matchup between two elite quarterbacks will likely be nothing of the sort.

Last Thursday, Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes suffered a dislocated knee cap during a win over the Denver Broncos, and while Mahomes has amazingly returned to practice this week, odds are, he won't be taking the field.

That means Matt Moore will assume the reins under center, and while Moore is actually a very capable backup, he isn't Mahomes.

Even though Kansas City is home, it is going to have a very difficult time beating a streaking Packers team without the reigning MVP, meaning running backs Damien Williams and LeSean McCoy must deliver.

Williams in particular has gotten off to a brutal start this season.

In five games (he missed two games with a knee injury), he has carried the ball 41 times for just 70 yards. Folks, that is an average of 1.7 yards per carry.

McCoy has been much more efficient, rushing for 322 yards and a couple of touchdowns while registering 5.4 yards per attempt, but the Chiefs will need more out of both backs if they want to stop Green Bay.

The Achilles heel of the Packers is their run defense.

Green Bay ranks just 24th in the NFL in defending the run and is allowing a hefty 4.9 yards per rush. Most recently, Oakland Raiders running back Josh Jacobs gashed the Packers for 124 yards.

Now, neither Williams nor McCoy (at this stage) are as effective as Jacobs, but if there were ever a time for Kansas City's halfbacks to break through and have a big week, this is it.

McCoy in particular could have a significant outing.

He was solid in Week 7, carrying the ball 12 times for 64 yards against the Broncos.

That has basically been McCoy all season. He hasn't been elite or anything special, but he has gotten the job done, ripping off chunks of yardage with each carry and making the most of his opportunities.

McCoy's best days are obviously long behind him, but he is also clearly playing a heck of a lot better than he did during his final year with the Buffalo Bills, and if the Chiefs want to win this weekend, he may have to channel some of his old Shady ways.

As for Williams? The 27-year-old had a strong showing late last season and in the playoffs after Kareem Hunt's departure, but outside of those few games, we knew little to nothing about what he could do coming into 2019.

He barely received playing time during his four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, and thus far this season, he has become a relative afterthought in Kansas City's offense.

I'm not sure what the problem with Williams is. Perhaps he's still hurt. Maybe he has lost his confidence. Or maybe he just isn't very good.

Whatever the case may be, he will have a chance to make an impact this Sunday and potentially save his role in the Chiefs' offense, because if he keeps going this route, he may end up falling behind second-year back Darrel Williams on the depth chart.

Regardless, with Mahomes almost surely out, Kansas City needs its running backs now more than ever, especially against a red-hot Packers club.
