The New York Yankees offseason has been a puzzling one to say the least.

The Yankees entered the offseason as the favorites to land multiple big name free agents. Players such as Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story, and more were all linked to the team. Instead, they displayed a hesitancy to make any major moves on the open market and watched the marquee players sign elsewhere with the exception of Story, who is still a free agent market as of this story's writing. However, the offseason has been a disappointment for the team for more reasons that simply missing out on free agents. Rather, the Yankees were absolutely fleeced by the Minnesota Twins in their recent trade to acquire Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa for Gary Sanchez and Giovanny Urshela.

Yankees Bailed the Twins Out Financially

The Yankees took on $50 million dollars between Donaldson and Kiner-Falefa. Kiner-Falefa is a sold shortstop and is the cheaper option. However, Donaldson is past his prime at age 36 and has a massive contract on the books. A contract of his magnitude was holding the small market Twins back financially, so the Yankees bailed them out by trading for the third baseman.

Now, Donaldson still is a solid player. He hit 26 home runs last season, but also posted a batting average of under .250. Those numbers are not worth the $21 million dollars he is owed over the course of the next two seasons.

Minnesota Signed Carlos Correa after the Trade

With newfound payroll flexibility, the Twins immediately entered the free agent market. They also had already acquired an extremely underrated player in Giovanny Urshela from New York to be the team's third baseman in 2022. Gary Sanchez also offers plenty of power potential behind the plate. So they new that if they were able to add a high-profile player in free agency that they might have a realistic chance to compete this season.

And sure enough, it was recently announced that the Minnesota Twins signed Carlos Correa to a three-year $105.3 million dollar contract. Correa was a player who was originally linked to the Yankees as well.

When it was all said and done the Twins ended up with a 26-year old elite shortstop who many felt the Yankees should have signed, while the Yankees took on the contract of an aging 36-year old veteran. New York could still salvage things to an extent by signing Trevor Story, but there is not much debate as to who the trade between the Twins and Yankees.
