Earlier on Wednesday, Russell Westbrook was asked whether he needed to make a sales pitch to his teammate Paul George in his upcoming free agency. According to ESPN, this is what the reigning MVP had to say about his plans to woo Paul George to stay with the Thunder long term.

“No. Sales pitch is gonna be when we win a championship,” Westbrook said. “Beat that pitch.”

Paul George had some different thoughts when asked if his lone season with the Thunder would be a championship-or-bust.

“I’m very conscious that we’re only together for a year so far, and we continue to go in an upward trend. It’s best to stick with what we have and work on building. So, I wouldn’t say it’s championship or bust, or championship and I’m out. It’s all about building. If I like where we’re building or the level that we’re going at, it would be stupid to walk away from that.”

Paul George made headlines this offseason when he declared that he would not re-sign with the Indiana Pacers next year, leading some to believe that he was planning to sign with the Lakers down the road. To give the claims more credibility, the Lakers were fined $500,000 for allegedly tampering, which is a fundamental rule that prohibits teams from pitching NBA players before the free agency moratorium.

It appears that George and Westbrook have different beliefs on what it would take for the star forward to stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder long term. George, himself, is looking for a team with a great foundation. Westbrook believes that a title will be enough to convince his teammate to stay.

George is still attracted to Los Angeles, where he considers his home to be. He has openly stated that he has no regrets announcing his intentions to leave the Pacers, and that he would have “loved” a trade to the Lakers before the Thunder. Signs are pointing towards an interesting free agency campaign for George, no matter where he goes.
