A chance to secure a spot in the knockout round is on the table as Turkey faces Portugal. It is time to continue our 2024 Euros odds series with a Turkey-Portugal prediction and pick.

Turkey faced Georgia in their first match of the tournament. After Mert Muldur scored in the first half for Turkey, Georgia tied it in the 32nd minute on a goal from Georges Mikautadze. Turkey would score on an Arda Guler goal in the 65th minute, and then in the final minutes of stoppage time, Kerem Akturkoglu scored to make it 3-1. Turkey would win by that margin. Meanwhile, Portugal was held scoreless in the first half and would concede the first goal of the game in the second half on a score from Lukas Provod. Czechia would give up the lead just seven minutes later on an own goal, and then, two minutes into second-half stoppage time, Francisco Conceicao scored for Portugal, giving Portugal the 2-1 win.

Why Turkey Will Win

Turkey was a solid scoring team in the qualifiers. They scored in seven of their eight matches, with their only game missing a goal being against a solid Croatia team. Turkey scored 1.75 goals per game on average in qualifying. Still, they were a slow-starting team in qualifying marches. Their average time of the first goal was in the 53rd minute, waiting until halftime to often score their first goal of the game. Still, Turkey knew how to finish games strong. Of their 14 goals in qualifying, six of them came in the 75th minute or later, with 14 of them coming after the 60th minute of play.

The Turkey squad is young, with one of their primary goal scorers being 25-year-old Kerem Akturkogolu. He played in eight matches in qualifying, starting seven and scoring twice. Akturgolu was one of the men who forced the most action, shooting a team-leading 17 times, while having seven hit the target. He scored against Georgia in the first match-day. Akturgolu was aided by the 23-year-old Orkun Kokcu. In five matches, he had the most points on the team, coming away with a goal and two assists. He had an assist in the first match of the tournament. Mert Mulder was also solid in the first game, having three shots, with two on target, and one goal.

The key for Turkey will be its defense. This is led by goaltender Mert Gunok. He played five games, allowing just six goals and having a save percentage of 75 percent. He was solid in the first match, saving three of four shots. Mulder also was solid on the defensive end. While he scored the goal, he had two takeaways and an interception from his defensive position.

Why Portugal Will Win

Portugal dominated in qualifying, winning all ten of their matches. Not only did they win all ten, they allowed goals in just one game, a 3-2 win over Slovakia. Portugal was scoring 3.6 goals per game in qualifying and will be looking to keep that going. This will be led by Cristiano Ronaldo. He played in just nine of the ten matches, scoring ten goals and having an assist. He scored three penalty kicks in those ten goals and was averaging 1.25 goals per match. Even without the penalty kicks, he was scoring .87 goals per match and had a point per match in qualifying Ronaldo had five shots, with three on target and a blocked shot, but could not find the back of the net.

He was set up by Bruno Fernandes in qualifying. Fernandes played in all ten matches and also did his fair share of scoring. he scored six goals in those matches but set up players with eight assists. that gave him 1.5 points per match. Fernandes did have two shots and opened one opportunity in the first match.

Rounding out the top trio is Bernardo Silva. Silva played in nine matches, scoring three times and having four assists. Silva also had two shots with one on target in the first match.  While most of the focus is on Fernandes and Ronaldo, Silva can create scoring opportunities that make Portugal a tough team to stop. He created one scoring opportunity in the match with Czechia. Portugal also has quality depth. Four different players scored three goals in qualifying. It was the depth that provided Portugal with their lone goal in the first match, coming from Francisco Conceicao.

Final Turkey-Portugal Prediction & Pick

Portugal struggled in their first match and was not impressive. They could not find ways to score and could have easily lost the match. The first goal was a lucky break on an own goal, and the second was on a break in the dying embers of the game. Meanwhile, the Turkey offense was solid. They are a young team, but they will not be afraid of Portugal here. While taking Turkey on the double chance at +135 is a solid play, with how both teams reduced pressure, the best play in this one is on the total.
