After a notable wait, Caleb Williams officially announced earlier this week his decision to transfer to the USC Trojans to reunite with former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.

Williams had a multitude of options on the table once he opted to enter the transfer portal, from returning to Oklahoma to play under new head coach Brent Venables to possibly taking his talents to the Chip Kelly-led UCLA program. In the end, he chose USC, with one of the reasons being his aim to pick a program that would provide him with the “best development both on and off the field.”

For Riley, he already has a sense as to just how Williams will fit in his offense, which he explained further during his national signing day press conference on Wednesday.

“I mean, he's a talented player,” Riley said. “You know, felt that from when I got to see him in high school. Felt like he had all the tools to really be a good player. And I think most importantly, he's confident, he's a confident man, he works really hard at his craft. And he does a great job of bringing people together.

“So he certainly was thrown into some unique situations as a true freshman for us last year and handled them well. And I think he will be a really positive member of this team. I think that's the thing he's most excited about right now… So he will be a great addition to our quarterback room and to our team.”

As Riley touched on, Williams had quite a freshman year with the Sooners over the recent 2021 season. Amid quarterback Spencer Rattler’s roller-coaster start to the campaign, Riley opted to feature Williams in the Sooners offense — and the true freshman did not look back from there. Williams notched 21 passing touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns over 11 games played in what turned out to be his lone year with the Sooners.

Williams will not be the only transfer addition that Riley will feature in the Trojans offense over the upcoming season, as the likes of running backs Travis Dye and Austin Jones are also slated to be focal points in it as well.

USC is aiming to redeem itself from its 4-8 finish in the 2021 campaign.
