Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio didn't shake the hand of New York Jets head coach Adam Gase after Thursday night's game, and his reasoning had nothing to do with social distancing.

Rather, Fangio was “pissed off” at Gase — with whom Fangio worked alongside for the Chicago Bears — and the Jets coaching staff for the multiple hits his young quarterback, Brett Rypien, suffered late in the game.

The Jets defense accrued six personal foul penalties in the ugly Thursday night affair, including two in the final moments on hits against the the rookie QB as he was closing out the win.

“There just was a couple personal fouls there at the end, and our sideline was getting pissed off about it,” Fangio said afterwards. “And I just wanted to avoid any confrontation at the end of the game and having it get ugly there. So I tried to get our guys to leave quickly, just to avoid anything happening there. I thought it was the prudent thing to do.”

The Broncos beat the Jets 37-28, to notch their first win of the 2020 season and of Rypien's career. The Jets fell to 0-4.

“They definitely did take a couple of late shots,” Rypien said in his postgame comments, “and that's to our benefit.”

New York defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was in charge of the New Orleans Saints defense when the team was embroiled in the “Bountygate” scandal. The investigation revealed a history of Williams' encouraging players (often financially) to injure opposing QBs. He was suspended for the 2012 season.

After the game, NFL Network analyst Steve Smith shredded Williams and his defense for the dirty tactics against the Broncos.

“That’s what he wants his players on defense to be,” Smith said. “His defense is about that BS. That’s how he coaches them. That’s how he influences them.”

A fine coaching staff they've put together in New York.
