John DeFilippo was in play to become the next offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles if Frank Reich took the Indianapolis Colts' head coaching job, but once the Minnesota Vikings OC job presented itself, he didn't hesitate.

DeFilippo became the Vikings' new offensive coordinator on Thursday, replacing Pat Shurmur after he left for the New York Giants. DeFilippo also interviewed for the Arizona Cardinals and Chicago Bears' head coaching positions before they hired Steve Wilks and Matt Nagy, respectively.

For anybody wondering why DeFilippo would leave the Eagles for the Vikings right after winning the Super Bowl, the difference in their offensive coordinator jobs is that Doug Pederson calls the plays and oversees the offense in Philadelphia, whereas Mike Zimmer will give him the figurative keys to the car.

On Friday, DeFilippo talked about why the Vikings job stood above the rest, admitting that the opportunity to call plays played a role. From Vikings.com:

“When the Minnesota Vikings want to talk to you, that is a whole different ball game. We just got done playing them three weeks ago in the NFC Championship. As an offensive coach, I’ve never been more on edge planning for a defense than in the last two years. Obviously we came out on top those two games, but game planning against that defense and that team is not an easy thing to do.

“It was obviously a special opportunity to work for Coach [Mike] Zimmer and learn from him and work for another great head coach in another opportunity for myself to call plays. All of those things that I just said made the job very, very appealing.”

In addition to calling plays and setting up his own offense, DeFilippo will contribute to the Vikings' decision at quarterback. The team could keep impending free agents Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater, or Sam Bradford, or they can target a free agent like Kirk Cousins.
